The essentials of Guinea Pig Care:
- Feed a diet based on high fibre. Aim for 75%+ Hay and grass. Additional items to offer include varied, mostly leafy, vegetables, a small amount of quality Guinea Pig Pellets (we only recommend Oxbow brand) and occasional fruits. Do not feed mixes!
- Have your Guinea Pig desexed. If you plan to breed from a female ensure she has the first litter before 1 year of age to help prevent dystocia (difficult birth)
- Have regular health checks of your pet with a veterinarian experienced in dealing with unusual pets. Ideally this is at least every 6 months.
- Regular faecal examinations should be performed - twice yearly
- Once your Guinea Pig reaches 2 years of age a blood screen is recommended as this is the age we can see increased incidence of illnesses detectable on a blood profile
- Give your Guinea Pigs things to do and play with. Let them have fun! Tunnels, cardboard boxes etc make great play toys
